A Short Bio

James P. Werner is Associate Professor of Media Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He holds a dual placement in the Art & Design Department, and in the Science, Technology and Society program (STS) supporting the Media Arts, Society and Technology (MAST) minor. 

His current research focuses on contemporary art practices in media participation, virtual reality in art and education, and the evolution of the gallery and museum through media collaborations. His research has been funded by many organizations including the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation for Research, and the Research Development Initiative in the UK.  He is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on media in fine art and is co-editor and co-author of Art as Adventure: Going Beyond (2018), Cambridge Scholars Publishing.  

Werner's artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His current series Water Links is a collaboration with communities capturing unique narratives about water and climate change from diverse and rural communities around the globe. Recent exhibitions were held at CreateX in Brisbane Australia, a collaboration between Aotearoa, New Zealand and California participants of SCANZ in March, 2017, and at the Flow exhibition held at Fort Knox, in Prosepect, Maine, June 2017.
